How to tell if your Shopify store in Argentina is actually making money

Shopify Payments does not exist in Argentina: you pay Mercado Pago, Meta Ads, shipping and product costs without seeing them together. Here is the real calculation.

Your Shopify store is selling well. The dashboard shows revenue in green. But when you check the bank account, it does not add up. The problem is simple: Shopify does not calculate your real profitability — it only shows sales. In Argentina, where Shopify Payments is not available and you must use Mercado Pago, your real costs are 3 to 5 layers deep that no Shopify dashboard adds up on its own.

Why does Shopify in Argentina have hidden costs the dashboard does not show?

In countries where Shopify Payments is available, the flow is clean: you sell, Shopify charges its processing fee, and credits you the rest. In Argentina that does not exist. Every payment goes through an external gateway — mostly Mercado Pago — which creates an additional cost layer that Shopify does not automatically record in your dashboard.

The result: Shopify shows sales and orders, but does not deduct Mercado Pago commissions, does not know what you paid in shipping, does not have your updated product costs, and knows nothing about what you spent on Meta Ads. You are making pricing and ad-budget decisions while looking at incomplete data.

The 5 real costs of selling through Shopify in Argentina

Here is the breakdown of what each sale really costs, with the current verified numbers:

Cost How much Does Shopify see it?
Mercado Pago Checkout fee (instant payout) 6.29% + VAT ≈ 7.61% No
Interest-free installment fee (3 installments) +10.49% + VAT on top of checkout fee No
Product costs (COGS) Varies by SKU Only if entered manually
Shipping to customer Varies Partially
Meta Ads spend Varies No

Source for Mercado Pago data: Mercado Pago Argentina costs, effective March 6, 2026.

Concrete example: You sell a product for ARS 100,000. The customer pays in 3 interest-free installments with Mercado Pago.

Base fee at instant payout: ARS 7,608 (6.29% × 1.21 VAT). Installment fee: ~10.49% × 1.21 = ARS 12,694. Just in financial costs you lose ARS 20,302 on a ARS 100,000 sale — and that is before product cost, shipping, and what you spent on ads to acquire that customer.

Why does the Shopify dashboard not show your real profitability?

Shopify shows "gross profit" if you enter product costs on each variant. But that only subtracts COGS — it does not deduct the Mercado Pago commission, does not know what you spent on advertising to generate that sale, and does not include installment fees. The figure you see as "gross profit" in Shopify can differ from your real margin by 15 to 40 percentage points.

There is another problem: Shopify reports mix all channels together. If you also sell on Mercado Libre or Tiendanube, each channel has its own cost structure and Shopify only shows what went through its own platform.

How to calculate the real profitability of your Shopify store

The basic formula is simple. The hard part is having all the data in one place:

Real margin = Selling price − Product cost − MP commission − Installment fee − Shipping − (Ad spend ÷ units sold) − Other fixed costs (prorated)

The problem with doing this in a spreadsheet is that the data lives in four different systems: Shopify (sales), Mercado Pago (commissions and installments), Meta Ads (ad spend), and a separate spreadsheet (COGS and shipping). Updating that manually takes 2 to 4 hours a week and there is always something out of date.

Escalafy connects all of this for Shopify: imports your sales, adds the Mercado Pago commissions, subtracts product cost by SKU, allocates Meta Ads spend across the units it generated, and shows you real margin in real time — no exports, no manual calculations.

What Escalafy actually shows for an Argentina Shopify store

  • Margin by product, by campaign, and by channel
  • Cash flow forecast: when Mercado Pago will pay you, based on payment method and number of installments

Frequently asked questions

Does Shopify Payments work in Argentina?

No. Shopify Payments is not available in Argentina. You must use an external payment gateway — most commonly Mercado Pago — which adds a layer of fees that Shopify does not automatically record.

How do I know if my Shopify store is profitable?

You need to calculate: selling price minus product cost, minus Mercado Pago fee (6.29% + VAT at instant payout), minus installment fee (if applicable), minus shipping, minus the portion of ad spend attributable to that sale. If the result is positive, that sale was profitable. The challenge is doing this for every sale each month without a tool.

How much does Mercado Pago charge for processing Shopify payments?

The base commission for Mercado Pago Checkout in Argentina is 6.29% + VAT at instant payout, 4.39% at 10 days, or 3.39% at 18 days (effective March 2026). Installment fees are added on top if the customer chose that option.
