E-commerce metrics in Argentina: the ones that actually tell you if you're making or losing money

CAC, ROAS, margin, cash flow: there are dozens of metrics for an e-commerce store, but most founders watch the ones that don't matter and miss the ones that do. Here are the 6 metrics that decide whether your business is profitable or not.

The Tiendanube dashboard shows you 40 metrics. Meta Ads gives you another 30. Google Analytics adds 50 more. The result: e-commerce founders in Argentina staring at endless dashboards without knowing whether the business is making or losing money. The e-commerce metrics that matter are far fewer. And they're not the flashiest ones.

Why do most people watch the wrong metrics?

The problem is who designed each dashboard. Tiendanube shows you gross sales because that's its success metric. Meta shows you ROAS and impressions because it needs you to believe your ads work. Google Analytics shows you sessions and bounce rate because that justifies its existence.

None of those metrics tell you whether the business is profitable. They tell you whether it's active. An e-commerce store can have record sales and be losing money on every transaction. Revenue grows, stock moves, and the real margin is negative. It happens more often than you think.

E-commerce in Argentina grew 14.1% year over year according to the CACE 2026 study. That growth doesn't mean businesses are more profitable — it means they sell more. Those are different things.

Vanity metrics vs. the metrics that matter

Vanity metrics: Instagram followers, impressions, clicks, campaign reach, store visits, number of orders.

Metrics that matter: real margin per sale, true ROAS (Blended ROAS), real CAC, available cash flow, SKU profitability, break-even point.

If your weekly business meeting revolves around the first group and not the second, you're managing perceptions, not a business.

The 6 e-commerce metrics that actually decide whether you make money

1. Real margin per sale (not gross margin)

Gross margin only subtracts the cost of goods from the selling price. Real margin subtracts everything: product cost, shipping, platform fees, payment processor fees, packaging, attributed ad cost and the proportional share of fixed costs.

A 40% gross margin can turn into an 8% real margin once you add Mercado Libre fees (between 11% and 17% depending on category), the cost of Mercado Envíos Full, the Mercado Pago fee on interest-free installments (between 8% and 14% depending on the plan), and ad cost.

If you don't know your real margin, everything else is speculation. More on how to calculate this number in the article on how to calculate your real profit margin.

2. Blended ROAS (real ROAS, not Meta's)

Meta's ROAS is the ratio between the sales Meta says it generated and your spend on Meta. Blended ROAS is the ratio between your real total sales and your total ad spend (Meta + Google + any other channel).

Meta misattributes between 30% and 50% of conversions. When you cross your store's real sales with real ad spend, ROAS usually comes out considerably lower than what Meta reports. And that lower number is the real one.

The minimum Blended ROAS to be profitable depends on your margin. If you have a 25% margin, you need a Blended ROAS of at least 4x just to cover cost of goods. Read more about this in the analysis of how to calculate your real Blended ROAS.

3. Real CAC (Customer Acquisition Cost)

Real CAC includes ad spend plus agency fees, welcome discounts and the logistics cost of the first order, divided by the real number of new customers (not the number Meta reports).

If your real CAC is higher than the margin on the first purchase, you need customers to come back for the business to be profitable. If you don't know your repeat purchase rate, you don't know whether your model works either.

4. Available cash flow (not revenue)

An e-commerce store can have excellent revenue and still not have the cash to pay suppliers. It happens when Mercado Libre or Mercado Pago payout timelines (7 to 21 business days) don't line up with your supplier payment terms.

The relevant metric isn't how much you sold — it's how much cash you have available today and how much you'll have next week. Projected cash flow lets you plan stock, negotiate with suppliers and avoid running into overdraft.

5. Monthly break-even point

How many sales do you need each month to cover all your fixed costs? If you don't know that number, you don't know whether a bad month was "bad but normal" or "we're in trouble."

The break-even point divides monthly fixed costs (rent, salaries, software, subscriptions) by the contribution margin per unit. If your fixed costs are $500,000 and your real margin per sale is $5,000, you need 100 sales to reach break-even.

6. Profitability by channel and by SKU

Not all channels are equal. A sale on Mercado Libre has different costs than a sale on Tiendanube: different fees, different shipping costs, a different payment processor. A product can be profitable on Tiendanube and lose money on Mercado Libre.

Crossing these two dimensions (channel × SKU) gives you a profitability matrix that tells you exactly where to focus. Escalafy calculates this matrix automatically with its profitability by product feature.

Why isn't Excel enough to measure these metrics?

All of these metrics require crossing data from multiple sources that don't talk to each other: Tiendanube or Shopify for sales, Meta Ads for ad spend, Mercado Pago for fees, Mercado Libre for marketplace fees, your costing system for cost of goods.

Doing that cross-check in Excel takes between 2 and 4 hours a week, always has update errors, and goes stale within hours. In a business where the exchange rate fluctuates, shipping costs change and ad campaigns are tweaked daily, a spreadsheet with three-day-old data won't help you make decisions today.

Escalafy's real-time profit feature replaces that manual process by connecting every channel and updating the metrics that matter with no manual work.

What Escalafy replaces

Somos Fans had a full-time employee dedicated to consolidating data from Tiendanube and Mercado Libre. With Escalafy, they connected everything in 5 minutes, and that employee now works on things that actually move the business. The cash flow predictor lets them plan stock weeks in advance — instead of reacting when it's already too late.

Frequently asked questions about e-commerce metrics in Argentina

What's the most important metric for an e-commerce store?

Real margin per sale, no question. It's the starting point for everything: without margin, there's no ROAS that justifies spending more on ads, no CAC that makes sense, no cash flow that holds up. Everything else depends on that number.

How often should you review your e-commerce metrics?

Cash flow and real ROAS, daily. SKU margin and CAC, weekly. Break-even point and profitability by channel, monthly. Real-time tools like Escalafy mean that "daily" doesn't involve extra work.

Is Meta's ROAS a reliable metric?

Not as a profitability metric. Meta's ROAS overestimates conversions by 30% to 50% and doesn't include any cost besides ad spend. It's useful for comparing campaigns against each other inside Meta, but not for measuring whether the business is making or losing money.

Which metrics matter for Tiendanube specifically?

Tiendanube does a good job showing gross sales and order volume. For the metrics that matter (real margin, cash flow, true ROAS), you need to cross Tiendanube data with Mercado Pago, Meta and your costs. Tiendanube doesn't do that — Escalafy does.

The e-commerce metrics that actually matter in Argentina aren't the ones that fill a platform's dashboard best. They're the ones that tell you, at a glance, whether the business is making or losing money. Real margin, Blended ROAS, real CAC, cash flow, break-even point, profitability by channel. If you don't have those six numbers clear, you're flying blind in a market that doesn't forgive.
