When Mercado Pago pays out: why you made sales but have no cash

Your sales are green but your account is empty. Mercado Pago's 2026 payout timelines and fees, and how to plan your cash flow without surprises.

It's one of the most confusing moments of running an e-commerce store in Argentina. The Tiendanube or Shopify dashboard shows sales. The Mercado Pago report shows sales. But your bank account is empty or shows a fraction of what you "should have." It's not a mistake. It's how Mercado Pago's payout timelines work — and if you don't understand them, your cash flow will always be a mystery.

Why doesn't Mercado Pago pay out instantly?

When a customer pays you, Mercado Pago processes the transaction but doesn't transfer the money to you right then. It acts as a financial intermediary: it holds the payment, checks there are no disputes or chargebacks, and then releases the money to your account according to the timeline for the payment method used.

That timeline varies a lot depending on how your customer paid. And that's the problem: if on the same day 20 people bought with a debit card, 15 with credit in installments and 10 with Mercado Pago balance, the money arrives in three separate batches, on different dates, in different amounts.

When does Mercado Pago pay out the money from an online sale?

In Argentina, with Mercado Pago Checkout (the one Tiendanube and Shopify use), the timeline doesn't depend on the payment method: you choose it, and the sooner you want the money, the higher the fee. The rate is the same for credit card, debit card, account balance or bank transfer.

When you get the moneyFee (+ VAT)

In 10 days4.39%
In 18 days3.39%
In 35 days1.49%

What if the customer pays in interest-free installments?

The timeline is the same one you chose. What changes is how much you receive: Mercado Pago deducts the processing fee plus the cost of offering interest-free installments, which is 10.49% for 3 installments, 18.69% for 6 and 32.29% for 12, plus VAT (costs in effect since 2/10/2026). Installments don't delay your money: they shrink it.

So why doesn't my bank balance add up?

Because each sale lands on a different date depending on the timeline you've set up, and arrives with a different deduction depending on how each customer paid. If you get paid at 35 days to pay a lower fee, everything you sold this month only shows up next month. And if you haven't withdrawn the money from Mercado Pago to your bank, it stays in your Mercado Pago account even though it's already been paid out.

Point and QR payments have their own rates; this article is about online sales.

If 60% of your sales are on credit cards in installments, what you "sold" today doesn't exist as available cash for weeks or months. That gap between sales and available cash is one of the biggest operational problems for an Argentine e-commerce store.

How do payout timelines affect cash flow?

Picture this: you're running low on stock. Sales are going well. You decide to place a big order with your supplier so you don't run out of goods. The supplier wants payment in 15 days.

But 70% of your sales over the last 30 days were on credit cards. Part of that money hasn't been paid out yet. And the installment money will keep trickling in for weeks. You have sales on paper but no cash for the supplier.

That's a cash flow problem — not a profitability problem. Your business can be perfectly profitable and still get squeezed for liquidity. The difference between the two is crucial, and almost nobody understands it until they live through it.

How do you calculate when the money will arrive?

The only way to do it right is to keep track of:

  • Every sale with its payment method and number of installments
  • The payout timeline for that payment method
  • The resulting estimated payout date
  • The net amount after Mercado Pago fees (which also vary by payment method)

Crossing that with your payment commitments (supplier, logistics, advertising, salaries) gives you a cash flow projection. Without that projection, you're running the business by looking in the rearview mirror.

The problem is that doing it in Excel with hundreds of daily sales is impossible in practice. It's updated late, it has errors, and it never reflects the actual situation in real time. See why Excel doesn't scale for managing e-commerce finances.

The fees that also take a cut

The payout timeline isn't the only factor. How much arrives matters too. Mercado Pago charges fees on every transaction, and those fees vary by payment method.

A $10,000 sale doesn't pay out $10,000. It pays out $10,000 minus Mercado Pago's fee, which ranges from 1.49% to 6.29% + VAT depending on the timeline you choose. For interest-free installments, the cost of the "interest-free" part comes out of there too.

How Escalafy solves this

Escalafy connects to Mercado Pago and automatically calculates when each sale will be paid out, based on the payment method and installment plan. In the dashboard you can see:

  • How much cash you have available today
  • How much you'll receive this week and next month
  • The curve of projected payouts for the next 90 days
  • How much of what you "sold" is still in transit in Mercado Pago

That lets you make stock purchasing, ad spend and financial commitment decisions knowing exactly when you'll have the money. Not estimates: real data from every order. You can see it in Escalafy's real-time real profit module.

FAQ

Can I withdraw money from Mercado Pago before it's paid out?

Yes, with some premium Mercado Pago plans you can bring the payout forward in exchange for an extra fee. It's like an implicit loan: you get the money sooner but pay more. If your business is healthy and the cost of that advance is lower than the cost of running out of working capital, it can be worth it. Run the numbers case by case.

Do payout timelines change?

Yes. Mercado Pago updates its timelines and fees periodically. It's essential to check the current timelines directly in your Mercado Pago account or its official help section — not to rely on blog articles that may be out of date. The timelines we describe here are a guide for 2026 but may change.

What happens if the customer files a dispute or chargeback?

If there's a claim while the money hasn't been paid out yet, Mercado Pago can freeze it while it investigates. If the dispute goes in the buyer's favor, the amount already paid out is clawed back or deducted from future payouts. It's another source of cash flow uncertainty most people don't account for.

How do I know the payout timeline for each specific sale?

In the Mercado Pago dashboard you can see the detail of each transaction with its estimated payout date. The problem is that if you have lots of orders, crossing that with your cash flow by hand isn't viable. That's where you need a tool that does it automatically for you.

What share of my sales should be in installments?

There's no single answer. It depends on your available working capital, your supplier terms, and how quickly you need to recover cash. In high-ticket categories (electronics, furniture, premium apparel), installments are almost mandatory to compete. In low-ticket categories, you can work to discourage installments with small perks for paying in a single installment.

Sales are the numerator. Cash flow is what lets you operate. You can have a profitable business and still go under for lack of liquidity if you don't understand when the money from each sale arrives. That gap between "I sold" and "I got paid" is the biggest operational risk for an Argentine e-commerce store.
