What Google Ads Enhanced Conversions are and how they raise your ROAS

Google Ads loses conversion data to ad blockers and iOS too. Enhanced Conversions is Google's answer — the equivalent of Meta's CAPI — and almost nobody in LATAM uses it.

Google Ads has its own version of Meta's Conversions API. It's called Enhanced Conversions, it's been around since 2021, and almost no e-commerce store in Argentina has it turned on. Meanwhile, Google is measuring fewer conversions than actually happen and optimizing your campaigns on incomplete data.

Why does Google Ads lose conversions?

The Google Ads tag works just like the Meta pixel: it's a script that runs in the buyer's browser. When someone reaches your order confirmation page, that script has to run and tell Google there was a conversion.

The problem is the usual one: browsers get in the way. Ad blockers, iOS tracking restrictions, Safari deleting cookies every 7 days, privacy extensions. Any of those scenarios can keep the tag from firing or make it arrive without identity data.

Google's own studies estimate advertisers lose between 20% and 40% of the conversions they should be measuring. In Argentina, with high ad blocker adoption on desktop and heavy iPhone use in certain segments, that number can be higher.

What exactly are Enhanced Conversions?

Enhanced Conversions is a system that complements the standard Google Ads tag. When the user completes a purchase, on top of the conversion event, you also send Google the buyer's identity data — mainly the email, and optionally the phone number and address.

Google receives that data, hashes it (turns it into an irreversible 256-bit code with SHA-256), and matches it against the profiles of users signed into Google accounts. If it finds a match, it can link that conversion to the user's original session — even if the standard tag was lost.

The result: more conversions measured, better signal for the Smart Bidding algorithm, a better calculated ROAS.

Enhanced Conversions vs Meta's Conversions API — are they the same thing?

Functionally, yes. Both solve the same problem: recovering conversions the browser tag couldn't measure, using the buyer's identity data.

The main difference is technical. Meta's CAPI runs in real time from the server. Google's Enhanced Conversions has two modes: Enhanced Conversions for Web (runs in the browser with data the tag captures) and Enhanced Conversions for Leads (for lead generation flows). For e-commerce, the Web mode is the relevant one.

How do you implement it in an e-commerce store?

There are three ways to implement it:

Option 1: Automatic (Google Tag Manager)

If you have Google Tag Manager set up correctly, you can turn on Enhanced Conversions from the interface without touching code. Google automatically pulls the email from the checkout form fields. It's the fastest option but also the least reliable — it depends on the fields being properly named and visible in the DOM.

Option 2: Manual (code on the confirmation page)

You modify the order confirmation page so the Google tag explicitly receives the user's email. You pass the hashed value straight to the tag. More reliable than the automatic option, but it requires access to the store's code.

Option 3: Google Ads API (server-side)

The most robust. You send the conversion event directly from your server to Google's API, with every identity parameter available. Similar to how server-side tracking works for Meta. It doesn't depend on the browser, and ad blockers don't block it.

You can read the official documentation at Google Ads Help — Enhanced Conversions.

What concrete results does it deliver?

Results vary by business, but Google reports typical improvements in its own documentation of:

  • 5% to 17% more conversions measured — sales that were happening but Google wasn't seeing
  • Better reported ROAS — not because you sold more, but because what you were already selling now gets counted
  • Better Smart Bidding performance — the Target ROAS / Target CPA algorithm learns faster with more data
  • Shorter learning phase — new campaigns exit the learning phase with less spend

The logic is the same as with Meta's CAPI: if the algorithm sees more conversions, it can optimize better. If it used to see 60 purchases and now sees 80, it has 33% more signal to decide who to show your ads to.

Does this affect my business's real ROAS?

This is the most important distinction you can make: Enhanced Conversions improves the ROAS Google reports. That's valuable because it lets you make better ad decisions. But your business's real ROAS — how much profit those sales left you after every cost — is a different story.

A 5x Google ROAS can hide a negative contribution margin if you aren't adding up the real product cost, shipping, Tiendanube or Mercado Libre fees, discounts and interest-free installments.

Seeing your e-commerce store's real ROAS means crossing Google's data with your real costs. That's where tools like Escalafy make the difference versus settling for what Google reports.

What Escalafy does here

The Escalafy server-side pixel connects to Meta CAPI and can be complemented with Google's Enhanced Conversions. But the key difference is that Escalafy already knows the real cost of each product, shipping, fees and installments — so every recovered conversion shows up with its real profit, not just its revenue.

Recovering events is step one. Knowing whether those events were profitable is step two. Escalafy does both. You can see it on the server-side pixel page.

FAQ

Do Enhanced Conversions replace Google's standard conversion tag?

No. It's an add-on. You need the standard tag working, and Enhanced Conversions boosts it by recovering the conversions the tag missed. If you turn off the standard tag, Enhanced Conversions doesn't work.

Is it legal to send customer data to Google?

Yes, within Google Ads' terms and as long as your privacy policy discloses the use of data for advertising. Google receives the data hashed — it has no access to the original email — and uses it only for internal matching. In Argentina there's no specific regulation that prohibits it; still, check with your legal advisor if you have doubts.

How long until you see the impact?

Google takes between 7 and 14 days to process and display enhanced conversions historically. The impact on campaign performance (Smart Bidding learning from more data) starts to show after 2-4 weeks.

Can I use it if I'm on Tiendanube or Shopify?

Yes. Tiendanube has a native integration with Google Tag Manager. So does Shopify. The automatic GTM implementation is the most accessible without touching code. The server-side option takes more setup but delivers better results.

Should I turn it on if I spend little on Google Ads?

If you spend less than $500 USD/month on Google Ads, the impact is smaller because the algorithm has little data either way. For accounts with more volume, the improvement in conversion signal carries more weight. That said, turning it on costs nothing and improves your data foundation for when you scale.

Can it be used alongside Chrome's Privacy Sandbox?

Yes. Enhanced Conversions is designed to be compatible with the cookieless future. Google is betting that Enhanced Conversions (together with the Google API) will be the main measurement mechanism once third-party cookies disappear completely. Implementing it now is preparing for that scenario. More info in the Google Ads API documentation.

Google Ads is losing between 20% and 40% of your conversions. Enhanced Conversions recovers them. It isn't complicated to turn on and it costs nothing. There's no reason to keep going without it.

And once you recover those conversions, make sure you're looking at your campaigns' real ROAS, not just what Google reports.
