Meta says 4x ROAS: how to calculate your real ROAS and stop burning cash

Meta shows you an impressive ROAS, but once you add up all your real costs, the number changes drastically. Learn how to calculate your True ROAS and make decisions on real data, not inflated estimates.

Your real ROAS is the revenue attributable to your ads divided by everything you spent to generate it — not just ad spend: also product cost, payment fees, the cost of installments and shipping. Meta reports the first number; your bank charges the second. That is why a 4x ROAS can still close the month at a loss.

What is real ROAS and how do you calculate it?

There are three numbers everyone calls "ROAS" and they do not measure the same thing. Same store, same month, here is how they land:

Metric What it divides What counts as cost This month's example
Meta's ROAS Sales Meta attributes to itself ÷ Meta ad spend Ad spend only $4,000,000 ÷ $1,000,000 = 4.0x
True ROAS Verified campaign sales ÷ ad spend Ad spend only, no over-attributed sales $3,000,000 ÷ $1,000,000 = 3.0x
Blended ROAS Total revenue ÷ total ad spend All ad spend, every channel $4,500,000 ÷ $1,500,000 = 3.0x
What you actually keep Profit ÷ revenue Product, fees, installments, shipping and fixed costs Can be negative at 4x ROAS

The row that decides whether the month closes well is the last one, and it is the only one Meta cannot calculate: it does not know what your product costs you or what Mercado Pago charges you.

Your agency sends the monthly report. 4.2x ROAS. All green. You like the message and close the screen, satisfied. Then you open the spreadsheet and the month closed in the red.

This happens to dozens of Argentine stores every month. And it's not bad luck. The ROAS Meta shows you and the real ROAS of your business are two completely different numbers.

Why Meta's ROAS is a lie (or at least a half-truth)

Meta measures the sales it can attribute to its ads within a given time window. By default, it counts any purchase that happens within 7 days of clicking an ad, or 1 day after viewing it even without a click.

The problem? Someone can see your ad on Monday, search your brand on Google on Thursday, go straight to your store on Saturday and buy. Meta takes credit for that sale. Google claims it too. And the reality is that this person might have bought from you anyway, without any ad.

Marketing mix modeling studies consistently show that Meta over-attributes between 30% and 50% of the conversions it reports. In markets like Argentina, where the average ticket is lower and purchase cycles are shorter, that number can be even higher.

Meta ROAS vs True ROAS vs Blended ROAS: the difference that matters

There are three metrics you need to understand to know whether your advertising actually pays off:

  • Meta ROAS: what Meta says your ad spend generated. It includes inflated attribution and doesn't subtract any cost.
  • True ROAS (real ROAS): revenue actually generated by your ads divided by what you spent on advertising. Closer to reality, but it still doesn't account for your other costs.
  • Blended ROAS (MER – Marketing Efficiency Ratio): your store's total revenue divided by total ad spend across every channel. This is the number that really matters to know whether your business is profitable.

A concrete example: if Meta reports 4x ROAS but your Blended ROAS is 2.1x, and your product cost plus all operating expenses add up to 60% of every sale, you're losing money even though Meta tells you everything is fine.

How to calculate your real ROAS in 3 steps

To calculate your Blended ROAS you need three clear numbers:

  • Total revenue for the period: the sum of all your store's sales across every channel (Tiendanube, Mercado Libre, Shopify, direct sales).
  • Total ad spend: everything you spent on Meta, Google, TikTok, influencers and any other paid channel. No exceptions.
  • Blended ROAS = Total revenue ÷ Total ad spend.

If your Blended ROAS is 3x and your gross margin after costs is 40%, you have a net margin on ad spend of 6.7%. If it's 35%, you're at break-even. If it's lower, you're losing money.

The problem is that calculating this number by hand means pulling data from Meta Ads Manager, Google Ads, Tiendanube or Shopify, Mercado Libre and, in many cases, your agency's reports. That takes hours. And by the time you've put it together, the month is already over.

Why your agency shows you Meta ROAS and not Blended ROAS

It's not necessarily bad faith. The ROAS Meta reports simply makes the agency look good. If Meta ROAS is 5x, the client is happy and doesn't ask questions.

The problem comes when that inflated ROAS is used to make investment decisions. "Let's raise the budget because the ROAS is amazing" is a sentence that can destroy your business's margin if the number you're looking at doesn't reflect reality.

Crafy is a perfect example: their agency charged them $180,000 ARS a month and sent reports with excellent ROAS. When they connected Escalafy and crossed that data with their store's real sales, they found $300,000 ARS a month going to ads that didn't convert. They tripled their revenue with half the ad spend.

What happens when Meta "loses" conversion data

Since the iOS 14 privacy changes, Meta has lost access to a significant share of conversion data on Apple devices. Without a proper Conversions API (CAPI) setup, an account can be losing between 25% and 40% of conversion events before Meta records them.

That means the ROAS you see can be either inflated (from over-attribution) or deflated (from conversions Meta doesn't record). Either way, the number is useless for making decisions.

How Escalafy shows you your real ROAS without you having to calculate it

Escalafy automatically connects your store (Tiendanube, Shopify) with your ad channels (Meta, Google) and with every other channel where you sell (Mercado Libre). It crosses real sales with real ad spend and shows you your Blended ROAS in real time, without you exporting a single spreadsheet.

On top of that, Escalafy's Track IA measures 100% of your conversions, including the ones Meta loses because of the iOS changes, so you get the most accurate number possible of how many sales your ads really generated.

You can also see ROAS by campaign, by ad set and by individual ad, but compared against your store's real sales, not against what Meta claims. So you know exactly what to turn off and what to scale.

The number you should look at every day

If you can only make one change today in how you measure your advertising, make it this one: stop using Meta ROAS as your main metric. Start looking at your Blended ROAS and cross it with your real margin.

For an e-commerce business with gross margins of 40-50%, a Blended ROAS of 3x or more usually means the advertising is profitable. Below 2.5x, you need to review it urgently.

Escalafy shows you this number updated in real time, no spreadsheets, no waiting for the end-of-month report. So you can make decisions today, not next month when the damage is already done.
