Real CAC in e-commerce: how to calculate it without Meta lying to you

Meta says your acquisition cost is $500 per customer. When you cross-check the real numbers, it's $1,300. Here's how to calculate your real CAC and why it matters more than any other metric.

Meta tells you that you got 200 new customers this month at $500 each. But when you cross-check the real numbers, it was 120 customers at $830. What's your real CAC? You probably don't know. And that's wrecking your profitability without you noticing.

What is CAC and why do most people calculate it wrong?

CAC (Customer Acquisition Cost) is how much it costs you to get a new customer. The basic formula is simple: total marketing and sales spend divided by the number of new customers.

The problem is that almost nobody includes every cost. And almost nobody uses the real number of new customers — they use the one Meta reports.

Meta over-attributes conversions by 30% to 50%. If Meta says it brought 200 customers and it really brought 120 (the other 80 would have bought anyway through organic or direct), your real CAC is 67% higher than what the dashboard shows you.

If your real CAC is double what you thought and your LTV (lifetime value) doesn't cover it with margin, you're growing backwards. More sales, more losses. Scaling without knowing your real CAC is the most expensive mistake in Argentine e-commerce.

Which costs to include in real CAC

Real CAC isn't just your Meta Ads spend. To calculate it properly, you have to include:

  • Meta Ads and Google Ads spend
  • Monthly agency fee: if you pay your agency $150K/month and get 300 customers, that's $500 of agency cost per customer in fees alone
  • Marketing tool costs: email, SMS, automations
  • Welcome discounts and coupons: if you use a 20% discount to convert, that 20% is part of the acquisition cost
  • First-order logistics cost: in Argentina, the first shipment is often free or subsidized
  • Processing fees on the first payment

Meta Ads CAC vs. real CAC: the example that hurts

Say this is your scenario:

  • Meta Ads spend: $2,000,000/month
  • Agency fee: $300,000/month
  • Meta reports: 400 new customers → Meta CAC = $5,000
  • Real customers (no inflated attribution): 250 → real ad CAC = $9,200
  • Plus agency fee: +$1,200 per customer
  • Plus welcome discount (15% of the $18,000 average ticket): +$2,700
  • Total real CAC: $13,100 per new customer

If your margin on the first purchase is 25% of an $18,000 ticket = $4,500, you're losing $8,600 per new customer. To be profitable, you need that customer to buy again at least 3 times. Do you know how many come back?

How to lower CAC without cutting spend

Once you know your real CAC, you can optimize:

  • Cut campaigns with high CAC: not every campaign acquires customers at the same cost
  • Focus on products with better LTV: customers who buy certain products tend to come back more
  • Check whether welcome discounts make sense: sometimes they capture customers who never return
  • Measure CAC by channel: Meta, Google and organic have very different CACs
  • Audit your agency's attribution: ask for real conversion data, not just Meta's

How Escalafy calculates your real CAC

Escalafy cross-references your real sales (from Tiendanube, Shopify, Mercado Libre) with your real ad spend (Meta + Google) and all your operating costs. It doesn't use Meta's attribution — it compares real sales with real spend.

  • Real CAC by channel: Meta vs. Google vs. organic, no inflation
  • CAC by campaign: which ones actually acquire profitable customers
  • CAC by product or category: some products have very high LTV and it's worth paying more for that customer
  • CAC trend over time: is your acquisition getting better or worse?

CAC isn't the enemy — not knowing it is

Many Argentine e-commerce stores have a "high" CAC that's actually fine — because their customers' LTV more than justifies it. Others have a CAC that looks low but they're losing money because customers don't come back.

The problem isn't the number. The problem is not knowing the real number.

With Escalafy, real CAC is a number on your screen. Not a 3-hour Excel exercise that always has errors.
