The real profit of an online store in Mexico is your revenue minus product cost, shipping, payment gateway fees — Mercado Pago charges between 2.95% and 3.49% + MXN 4 per transaction when paid out immediately, plus VAT —, platform fees, advertising spend and taxes. In most stores that number sits between 10% and 25% of the sale price, well below the margin that shows up on the revenue report.
Why isn't revenue the same as profit?
You did MXN 150,000 in revenue last month. That sounds good. The problem is that number is gross income before the list of who takes a cut: your supplier, the carrier, the payment gateway, the platform, Meta Ads and the SAT. Add it all up and real profit could be 15% or it could be negative — and without doing the math you don't know which.
Unlike a brick-and-mortar business, an online store's costs are fragmented across dozens of small line items that don't appear together in any single report. The supplier sends an invoice. Mercado Pago deducts from each payment. The carrier charges per shipment. Meta charges your card every week. None of those systems shows you the net result. That's work you have to do yourself.
How much does Mercado Pago charge per sale in Mexico?
Mercado Pago is the most widely used payment gateway on Tiendanube and Shopify in Mexico. Current rates for online payments:
| Payout timing | Rate (+ VAT) | Fixed charge |
|---|---|---|
| Immediately | 3.49% | MXN 4 |
| 14 days | 3.19% | MXN 4 |
| 30 days | 2.95% | MXN 4 |
If you offer interest-free monthly installments (mensualidades sin intereses, MSI), you absorb an additional charge on top:
| Installments | Additional charge (+ VAT) |
|---|---|
| 3 months | 4.69% |
| 6 months | 7.69% |
| 12 months | 12.89% |

The cost most sellers ignore: advertising. With a Meta-reported ROAS of 4x, customer acquisition cost looks manageable. But that ROAS is what Meta inflates — not the real number. Meta attributes 30%–50% of sales that would have happened without the ads. Your Real ROAS is almost always lower, which means your advertising cost per sale is higher than the panel shows.
How much does a Mexican online store actually earn? A complete example
A product sold at MXN 1,500, paid in full via Mercado Pago with immediate payout:
| Line item | Amount | % of price |
|---|---|---|
| Sale price | MXN 1,500 | 100% |
| Product cost (COGS) | −MXN 525 | 35.0% |
| Shipping (carrier) | −MXN 130 | 8.7% |
| Mercado Pago (3.49% + MXN 4) | −MXN 56 | 3.7% |
| Platform fee | −MXN 30 | 2.0% |
| Meta Ads (Real ROAS 4x) | −MXN 375 | 25.0% |
| Total costs | −MXN 1,116 | 74.4% |
| Real Profit | MXN 384 | 25.6% |
25.6% looks reasonable. Now turn on 12-month MSI: the financing fee takes another MXN 193. Profit drops to MXN 191 — 12.7% of the sale price. And that's before counting returns, income taxes or staff costs.
What are the most common hidden costs in Mexican e-commerce?
- Interest-free installments (MSI): the customer pays nothing extra, but you absorb the financing cost. At 12 months that's 12.89% of the sale price plus VAT.
- Returns: in fashion and electronics the return rate can reach 20%–30%. Every return includes reverse logistics and reconditioning costs that weren't in the original price.
- VAT on commissions: 16% VAT applies to Mercado Pago's fee, the platform fee and the ad agency fee. It doesn't appear as a line item in the sales report.
- Exchange rate: if you import in USD and sell in pesos, every movement of the dollar changes your margin without you changing the list price.
- Automatic discounts: cart promotions and coupon codes reduce your actual average sale price without you noticing until you review the settlement report.

Why aren't spreadsheets enough to calculate real profit?
The problem isn't the formula — anyone can copy it. The problem is speed and consistency. In a store selling 200 SKUs with 3 payment methods, shipments across the whole country and active campaigns on Meta and Google, keeping that calculation current in Excel takes 2–4 hours a day. And if a formula is wrong or you forget to update a product cost, all the numbers for that month are incorrect.
Spreadsheets also calculate the past. To decide whether to turn off a campaign destroying your margin, you need the number now — not 3 days later when you finish the monthly report. The gap between when a loss occurs and when you detect it is the most expensive gap in an e-commerce business.
How to see real profit from your Mexican store in real time
Escalafy connects your Shopify or Tiendanube store to all your data sources — Mercado Pago, Meta Ads, Google Ads, product costs — and calculates the real profit of every sale the moment it happens. Mercado Pago commissions are deducted automatically based on payment method and number of installments. The ROAS you see in Escalafy is Blended ROAS — the one that includes all channels and all costs, not the inflated number Meta shows in its panel.
The result: you know whether you're making or losing money before you close the day, by product and by campaign. You can turn off an ad or raise a SKU's price the moment the data justifies it. Learn more about how it works at Profit by Product and Real ROAS from Meta Ads.
Frequently asked questions
What profit margin is normal for e-commerce in Mexico?
A net margin between 10% and 20% is typical for categories like clothing, accessories and electronics. Categories with high shipping costs or frequent returns can sit at 5%–10%. Below 10%, any cost increase can push the operation into the red.
How do MSI affect margin in Mexico?
At 12 monthly installments, you absorb approximately 12.89% of the sale price plus VAT in financing fees alone. On MXN 1,500 that's an additional MXN 193 before counting the base gateway fee.
Does Escalafy work with Shopify stores in Mexico?
Yes. Escalafy connects with both Shopify and Tiendanube, and integrates Mercado Pago, Meta Ads and Google Ads data regardless of which country the store operates in. Mercado Pago Mexico rates are deducted automatically per sale.
How do I calculate Real ROAS from Meta Ads in Mexico?
The ROAS Meta shows includes conversions that would have happened without the ads. To calculate it correctly, cross your store's actual sales with ad spend per campaign. Read our how to calculate Real Blended ROAS guide for the step-by-step method.
