If you've been following AI, a new acronym started showing up everywhere in the last few months: MCP. It's worth understanding, because it's what separates an assistant that writes copy from one that can answer questions about your business.
The short definition
MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard for connecting AI assistants to external tools and data sources. It's basically a common plug: the tool exposes a connector and any assistant that speaks MCP can use it.
Before that, every integration was custom-built. With MCP, the same connection works for Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini or Grok — you set it up once per assistant and you're done.
Why it matters here
A language model, on its own, knows nothing about your store. If you ask it about your margin, it will produce something shaped like an answer: round numbers, report structure, confident tone. And all of it made up.
The problem isn't that it gets things wrong. It's that it gets them wrong confidently, in a format that looks verified. For money decisions, that's worse than no answer at all.
A connector changes the nature of the answer: the assistant stops completing text and starts querying a source. The answer becomes verifiable, because it came from the same place as your dashboard.
What it does NOT solve
It's worth being clear about this, because there's a lot of hype around it:
- It doesn't fix bad data. If your product costs aren't loaded, the assistant will read the wrong margin and explain it to you beautifully.
- It doesn't make decisions for you. It gets you the read faster; what you do with it is still up to you.
- It doesn't replace the dashboard. For visual exploration and spotting trends, the screen still wins. Chat wins on specific questions.
What changes in practice
The real change isn't technological, it's friction. There are plenty of questions you don't ask today because they cost fifteen minutes of platforms and spreadsheets. When they cost one sentence, you start asking them every day — and that's when you catch the campaigns that have been losing money for three weeks.
And with Escalafy
Escalafy exposes your reports over MCP: real profit, real ROAS, margins by product and inventory, with each metric's definition included so the assistant doesn't confuse revenue with profit. It's read-only access, it respects your account's permissions, and it's available on the Advanced plan.
