Profitability of your Shopify store in Argentina: the costs nobody tells you about

Shopify Payments doesn't exist in Argentina: every sale goes through Mercado Pago. Hidden costs destroy your calculated margin. Here's how to measure it for real.

To calculate the real profitability of your Shopify store in Argentina you need to add: product cost + Mercado Pago fee (6.29% + VAT for immediate payout, or more if you offer installments) + shipping + ad spend + Shopify plan + apps. Shopify Payments isn't available in Argentina, so every peso you collect goes through an external gateway with its own fees.

Why Shopify in Argentina is different from the rest of the world

In the United States, Europe, or Mexico, Shopify sellers can use integrated Shopify Payments with rates from 0.5% to 2%. In Argentina, Shopify Payments doesn't exist. Every store has to connect an external gateway — and the most widely used one is Mercado Pago.

That changes the entire cost equation. A Shopify store in Mexico might pay ~2.3% total in gateway fees. A Shopify store in Argentina pays between 1.49% and 6.29% in Mercado Pago fees alone — before calculating product cost, shipping, or advertising.

If you're on Tiendanube and considering a migration to Shopify, this is the analysis you need to run first: comparing plan prices isn't enough. The difference is in collection costs.

The real cost of collecting with Mercado Pago on Shopify Argentina

Mercado Pago Checkout fees have four tiers based on payout speed. All percentages carry an additional 21% VAT. Current as of March 6, 2026:

Payout timeline Base fee + VAT Real cost on $100,000 ARS
Immediate 6.29% + VAT $7,611
10 business days 4.39% + VAT $5,312
18 business days 3.39% + VAT $4,102
35 business days 1.49% + VAT $1,803

And if you offer interest-free installments, the cost multiplies. On 3 installments, Mercado Pago charges an additional 10.49% on top of the checkout fee. A $100,000 ARS sale in 3 installments: $7,611 (checkout) + $12,693 (installments, with VAT) = $20,304 for Mercado Pago alone. That's 20% of the sale before counting product cost. More detail: Mercado Pago fees explained.

The full example: what you actually earn on a $100,000 ARS sale

Say a Shopify store in Argentina sells a product at $100,000 ARS with a $40,000 product cost, absorbs shipping, and runs Meta Ads with a 5x ROAS.

Line item Single payment (immediate) 3 interest-free installments
Sale price $100,000 $100,000
Product cost (COGS) −$40,000 −$40,000
Mercado Pago checkout fee (6.29% + VAT) −$7,611 −$7,611
Installment cost 3× (10.49% + VAT) $0 −$12,693
Shipping absorbed by store −$5,000 −$5,000
Meta Ads (ROAS 5x = 20% of sale) −$20,000 −$20,000
Real profit $27,389 (27.4%) $14,696 (14.7%)

The difference between offering a single payment or 3 installments is $12,693 in margin per sale. If 60% of your customers choose 3 installments, your average margin is cut roughly in half.

The other costs that destroy your margin and almost nobody adds up

Mercado Pago is the most visible cost, but not the only one. Here's the full list to include when calculating the real difference between revenue and profit:

  • Shopify plan: monthly or annual platform cost, plus the transaction fee when you don't use Shopify Payments (varies by plan).
  • Shopify apps: email, popups, search, support, etc. An average store has 5–8 active apps adding USD 100–USD 300+ per month.
  • Agency or freelancer: if you outsource Meta Ads or Google Ads, that cost must enter the profitability calculation for each sale.
  • Returns: when you process a Mercado Pago refund, the checkout fee isn't always returned in full. That differential is a real loss.
  • Exchange rate: if you import products or pay suppliers in dollars, peso depreciation is a real cost that changes your margin month to month.

Real scenario: A store on Shopify billing $5,000,000 ARS per month could be earning $500,000 or $1,500,000 depending on how it sources inventory, how much it spends on ads, and what payment mix its customers choose. Without that real-time calculation, scaling is just guessing. Raising your Meta Ads budget without knowing your real margin is the fastest way to lose money at scale.

FAQs about Shopify profitability in Argentina

Is Shopify Payments available in Argentina?

No. Shopify Payments is not available in Argentina. To collect payments on your Shopify store in Argentina you need to integrate an external gateway such as Mercado Pago, Mobbex, or others. Check the updated list of available gateways at shopify.com.

Does Shopify charge an additional transaction fee in Argentina?

Yes. Shopify charges a transaction fee when you use an external gateway instead of Shopify Payments. The fee varies by plan (from 2% on Basic to 0.5% on Advanced). This fee is on top of whatever fee the gateway you use charges.

What happens to my margin when I offer interest-free installments on Shopify?

Every interest-free installment you offer comes out of your margin. Mercado Pago charges the financing cost to the seller: 2 installments 7.79%, 3 installments 10.49%, 6 installments 18.69%, 9 installments 26.49%, 12 installments 32.29% — all plus VAT, on the sale amount. Before offering installments, calculate whether your gross margin can absorb them.

How do I calculate Real ROAS from Meta Ads with my Shopify store?

The ROAS Meta shows is on gross revenue. Real ROAS is calculated on net profit after all costs. A campaign with 4x ROAS on gross revenue can be unprofitable if margins are thin and installments are involved. You need to know the full cost per sale before you can evaluate whether a ROAS is good or bad.
